Blog: The Government Wants To Buy Your Journalists

Yes, you read that right: in their latest attempt to transition the United States into a socialist country (or worse), Democrats are trying to buy off not only corporate media, but our entire press system.

If you need more proof that socialism is gaining traction in America, look no further than the $3.5 trillion spending plan being pushed by congressional Democrats.

Wrapped up in the less-than-tidy 2,465-page package is a dangerous progressive wish list item that is setting off every alarm in the WTP office: government funding for the media elite.

Serving as a lifeline for a failing industry that cannot capture public trust, the Local Journalism Sustainability Act would fund the salaries of journalists, incentivize small businesses to place ads in local publications, and even pay for your subscription to local news outlets.

With a broad definition of “local news” that leaves room for interpretation and could encompass any journalist living in a “local area” – even those under media giants like Gannett – the bill would cover as much as $25,000 of a reporter’s salary, leaving We The People with a critical question:

When the government is directly paying half your salary and subsidizing both of your employer’s main revenue sources, who are you actually working for?

Unfortunately, we already have the answer. This bill would jumpstart the transition of the American free press into state-run media.

Time and time again, we have seen this trend throughout history and in the modern day. Autocratic, communist, fascist and even socialist governments have a top goal of controlling the news, and they use that control to preserve their authority.

We The People has no delusions here: allowing the U.S. government to take financial control of the press is a terrible mistake that would undeniably result in tyranny.

We need your help to stop this in its tracks. Donate today to help us fight back against state-run media. Together, we can bring America back to the path of freedom.
