We The People hot take: Games are fun!
That’s right, no politics. Card games, ball games, video games–they are all great in our book.
People love to play games because, more than just recreation, they can give us purpose or a sense of belonging. Unfortunately–oops, spoilers, this is about politics–politicians love playing games more than anyone, especially when our freedoms are on the line.
Need proof? Look back to the far-flung past of just a few weeks ago, when the Biden Administration threatened to dismantle the filibuster because they couldn’t change Senate rules and pass their laughably ill-conceived voting rights overhaul. All of a sudden the rhetoric changed to the filibuster being a “Jim Crow relic.”
In other words: It is being used by the other team, so it must be evil!
We’ll save Democrats the embarrassment of pointing out that they used the filibuster 327 times in 2020 alone. And never mind the fact that Biden himself once threatened to use the filibuster to block George W. Bush’s would-be Black female SCOTUS nominee.
Of course, the filibuster survived because they couldn’t get a supermajority to vote against it. They should have listened to Joe Manchin:
“For the last year, my Democratic colleagues have taken to the Senate floor, cable news airwaves, pages of newspapers across the country to argue that repealing the filibuster is actually restoring the Senate to the vision of the Founding Fathers intended for this deliberative body,” Manchin (D-WV) said on the Senate floor. “My friends, that is simply not true.”
“It’s just not true. The United States Senate has never, in 233 years, been able to end debate on legislation with a simple majority vote.”
But, Democrats were willing to plow ahead because they were tired of losing and wanted to simply change the rules to get ahead.
To be fair, tons of people under the age of five do this. Why shouldn’t the Senate?
And don’t think that Democrats are done with the filibuster. It is clear that they will keep trying to change the rules in order to win.
Sure, we get it, don’t hate the player, hate the game. But we shouldn’t stand by while Biden, Schumer, Pelosi, and the rest of the Democrats say: “Let me win or I’ll steal your lunch money!”
But one thing is certain, We The People is here to stand up to the radical games the left tries to play with our democracy.
