Longtime followers of WTP know that we love to point out the many occasions that Democrats are hypocritical and two-faced. So, it comes as no surprise to We The People that while liberal politicians are loudly calling for pro-environment action, the policies they put into place are at best ineffective and at worst bad for the environment. Joe Biden’s energy policies are the perfect example.
If you haven’t spent the last several months living under a rock, you’ve probably experienced the skyrocketing gas prices that are breaking the bank all over the nation. The national average just peaked at a record setting $4.33/gallon, compared to an average price of about $2.88/gallon this time last year.
Despite claims from the mainstream media that this is solely the result of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, prices at the pump are climbing for a variety of reasons— including inflation and plain ole bad policy.
Let’s have a little history lesson.
Historically, the United States has been a net importer of petroleum. That means we import more petroleum products – like oil – than we export. We briefly turned things around in 2020 and 2021, but the U.S. Energy Information Administration has predicted that we will return to our importer status in 2022.
We have had opportunities to increase our own oil production and establish self sufficiency in the energy arena, perhaps most notably via the now-canceled Keystone XL pipeline. Biden shut down the pipeline on his first day in office, and he has spent every day since then crippling our domestic energy production. From banning new oil leases and threatening to increase taxes and regulation, Biden is bound and determined to kill off American oil.
Theoretically, that’s because he wants to lead us into a renewable energy focused future. Sounds great, right?
Here’s the problem: the United States doesn’t have the infrastructure in place to meet our nation’s energy needs. We are simply not prepared to transition to renewable energy, and we can’t change that overnight.
So, while Biden has been making heavy-handed changes to our energy policy, American oil consumption isn’t actually going down, and we’re burning even more fossil fuels to transport oil all over the world.
Democrats push heavily for the widespread adoption of solar panels, but ignore the negative impacts of manufacturing them. They managed to replace plastic straws with paper, but this too is not a green option. And don’t even get us started on how Liberal-fueled consumer culture is hurting the environment.
To make matters even worse, enter the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Politicians from both sides of the aisle are quick to condemn the purchase of Russian oil. The United States could fix our own energy issues and help turn our allies away from Russian oil if we reinstate Keystone XL and ramp up American energy production. But, Joe Biden would rather beg dictatorial governments for oil than do anything to fix the problem ourselves.
Besides the obvious economic and moral implications, this strategy does nothing to help our environment and in fact, makes things worse. And the trend of liberal anti-environmentalism doesn’t end with energy policy.
The issue is obvious to We The People: Democrats would rather engage in meaningless virtue signaling than make changes that actually help our environment. For our part, WTP has had enough of it.
