Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have said there’s a big difference between equality and equity— and they’re right.
In a 2020 campaign ad, Harris argued that equality means everyone is provided with the same level of resources, regardless of their background. Ditching the term that has historically defined America, Harris touts equity as the way into the future, claiming that allocating more resources to disadvantaged individuals would ensure everyone ends up at the same place.
This concept went on to serve as a cornerstone of Biden’s presidency, having already provided the basis for everything from White House blog posts to new working groups to healthcare policies, and it leaves We The People with no shortage of questions.
Beyond the social programs already built into our society and the criteria associated with them, how would we decide who is and is not starting out on equal footing? Do the determining factors come down to only race, gender, and sexual orientation — as the actions of the Biden administration have largely suggested thus far — or does household income, family status, or any other factor come into play?
Perhaps most importantly, what resources are included: healthcare, financial, educational, workforce development, community, or something more?
And once all of these decisions have been made, whose responsibility is it to provide for the resources to achieve this “equity”?
If you agree with the Biden-Harris administration, and your answer is “the government, of course!”, we have a pretty big problem:
That’s communism.
Though they stopped just short of using the term, the vision Biden and Harris are promoting is identical to that which we’ve seen plunge millions of people into decades of poverty, abuse, and rigid government control in China, Cuba, and other countries both modern and historical. Yes, everyone ends up in the same place: equally poor, equally miserable, and equally without a say in how their country is governed.
Allowing the government to take and allocate all of our resources as political leaders see fit is a sure-fire way to see increased government control, higher taxes, and continued decline in the quality and variety of services available. This is a path we do not want to go down.
We The People recognizes that there are times when we all need a little help along the way. Programs that help people find their path forward can be extremely beneficial. But pursuing equity over equality goes against every principle America is built upon.
We believe in the value of hard work, and we know that everyone in the United States has the freedom to pursue their dreams. You are responsible for creating your own future — a future you decide on and work for, not one that the government dictates everyone will share in equitably.
In the simplest of terms, We The People believes in the American dream, and we know that equal treatment for all will help us preserve it.
