Blog: Affirmative Action Does More Harm Than Good

Affirmative action might be struck down once and for all. WTP argues that it’s about time.

In case you missed it, the Supreme Court recently agreed to hear two cases on the use of affirmative action in higher education. The suits claim that these policies unfairly discriminate against Asian Americans.

Originally imagined as a race-blind protocol to ensure equal opportunities, it’s safe to say affirmative action has fallen short of expectations.

Now a policy stuck clinging to the realities of the 1960s, affirmative action is an ineffective tactic that more closely resembles reparations than equality. Indeed, as Stanford University’s Thomas Sowell observes in Affirmative Action Around The World, these policies primarily benefit minority applicants from middle- and upper-class backgrounds rather than those at the greatest disadvantage (sound familiar, Vice President Harris?)

And as Richard Sander and Stuart Taylor Jr. have pointed out, affirmative action even frequently hurts the so-called beneficiaries of the policy:

“Because of mismatch, racial-preference policies often stigmatize minorities, reinforce pernicious stereotypes, and undermine the self-confidence of beneficiaries, rather than creating the diverse racial utopias so often advertised in college-campus brochures.”

Moving beyond its failure to help minority groups as intended, affirmative action effectively creates barriers to success for otherwise well-qualified individuals. Even supporters of the policy can admit that it prevents deserving Asian Americans from attending the schools of their choice.

And with effects extending well beyond education, our nation is turning its eyes to a high-profile example of racial preference: in the wake of Justice Breyer’s retirement, President Biden has made it clear he’ll only consider black women for appointment to the Supreme Court.

Now moving chiefly to appease the liberal masses, Biden seems to have forgotten that he himself stopped George W. Bush from appointing SCOTUS’ first black female justice.

Once again smelling of the paternal racism that lies at the core of the Democratic party, it’s clear to us that regressive affirmative action policies are doing more harm than good.

Our founding fathers had a clear vision for the United States: a nation in which anyone, regardless of their background, could achieve success through hard work. It’s the American Dream, and we need to protect it for everyone.
